At 6:45 am on Wednesday morning, Ashly Ditlow and her family gushed out of their car, and snowflakes hovered in the parking lot of Sunshine Mountain Resort
Accompanied by her daughters, 13-year-old Bristol, 11-year-old Sedona, and her 19-year-old nephew Nicholas Bray, Ashly Ditlow (Ashly Ditlow) is in the same position on the Tercero chair lift. The prospect of the first place laughed. For the fifth consecutive year.
"This has become our family tradition," she said. "The first year we came at seven or eight in the morning, and there was only one person in front. I knew we could easily be the first since then."
This year, Ashly Ditlow (Ashly Ditlow) gave Bray the coveted first chair. He has never had a chance to be the first person to rest on the mountain.
In Sunlight’s cafeteria lounge, with her hands warming up on a cup of steaming hot chocolate, Bristol Ditlow watched skiers and snowboarders take the gondola up the mountain, she was splendid There was a gleam in the smile.
"Nicholas has been talking about this for at least three months," she quipped. "Being the first to climb the mountain is an achievement."
Bristol Ditlow is a true local of Sunlight, he learned to ski on the slopes when he was 3 years old. Later, she participated in the Buddy Werner racing competition, but she believed that racing was not her speed.
"Ski competition is not, like, my business," Bristol Dittlow said, pretending to wince when her mother secretly took a sip of her hot chocolate. "I like skiing now."
When the pandemic pushed everyone outdoors in 2020, Sunlight saw record-breaking season ticket sales-they didn't expect this phenomenon to happen again.
However, as of Wednesday, the resort’s director of sales and marketing, Troy Hawkes, said the resort’s pass sales had set another record.
"This is the opening day of our 55th season, so far we have seen about 100 skiers and snowboarders," Hawkes said. "With this fresh snow, we will be able to open up more terrain during the weekend."
On the opening day, only Tercero Lift and Midway Run were available. This was mainly because there was not much snow before this year and the temperature was higher than average.
Hawkes said that in places where other industries are struggling with labor shortages, the resort hasn't had too much trouble filling the staff roster.
"We need more ski instructors," he said. "But other than that, we are fully staffed."
The violent storm that swept the Rocky Mountains on Tuesday night dropped the resort about 5 inches, forming about 1 foot of snow, but the ski patrol director Tracy Liss said the snowmakers were still working through the night.
"Please pay attention to the closure-they exist for a reason-in some areas we still cannot provide rescue," Leese asked the user. "Because of the snow being made, we encourage people not to go up the mountain at night now, but Babbish Gulch is open 24/7."
When Pastor Kimberlee Law slid down the Midway Run, a huge silver cross hung on her flowing white robe.
Representing St. Barnabas’s Anglican Church, 546 Hyland Park Avenue, Law followed the ten-year tradition established by the priests who served before her and said blessings to the Tercero elevator on the opening day.
"We bless the mountain, because the mountain blesses us," Luo said. "We pray for snow, safety and a good time."
As a skier with 30 years of experience, Law said that she has been skiing in Sunlight for the past few years and loves to frequent the close skier community of the resort's ski slopes.
"This is a gem hidden on the mountain," Luo added with a smile, "I am trying to get my congregation to come here to participate in the service on the hillside."
Back in the resort lounge, Ashly Ditlow called her children together, ready to run again in the mountains.
"We got up at 4:30 this morning to prepare," she said. "Girls love it. They usually ask to play hooks so they can take part in several competitions. Anyway, their school closed today, so it succeeded."
Ashly Ditlow is a native of Florida. At the age of 10, the family moved to the Front Range of Colorado and learned to ski. About a year later, they moved to Roaring Fork Valley, and Ashly Ditlow has been skiing ever since.
"I like being here in the sun," she said. "It has a small town feel. We know everyone, we can leave our equipment in the lounge, and we can ski without any worries."
Gray clouds filled the valleys, hiding most of the mountain peaks, because Ditlows put on their skis and wrapped winter gear from head to toe to resist the biting wind.
"The last time they plowed, there was at least 3 inches of fresh snow on it," Ashly Ditlow said as she walked towards the chair lift. "It's like cutting butter."
